Imagine a world where Dr. Martin Luther King and Malcolm X never existed. One where Kimberly Solberg wants happiness with a guy that will lead her to paradise and one where the Honorable Minister Kublai Khan dreams his people can live without prejudice and domination. Kim goes to Juarez to find her way and the minister goes to the nation's capital to champion justice. Their lives intertwine in Los Angeles where they confront racial hatred, murder and chaos. Mixed Blessings is a women's thriller about moving beyond skin color in relationships.

Mixed Blessings is a fast paced romp captured in the modern day rhythm of culture, geography and the racial tensions that intersect in Southern California. It’s a love letter to Los Angeles that is caught between the traffic and fast lanes that pulse through these pages. A peek into lives I bump into but would otherwise miss if not for J.M. Muse’s observant pen. I’m looking forward to his next tale.

This book surprised me in the best ways. Mixed Blessings is very well written and has fantastic character building. Initially, I had made assumptions about the kind of book it would be, based on the character Kimberly. Then with the introductions of the newer characters, it took me down a fantastic literary journey I didn’t expect. The setting is modern, so it makes the book very relatable. Additionally, the author does a fantastic job with character building. Mixed Blessings is fun and very easy to read. I really couldn’t put the book down and when I finished a chapter, I just wanted to know more – what would happen next?! I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a gripping read. I hope to see more work from Mr. Muse.

In Mixed Blessings there's so much going on but comes together as life comes together – complex and raw. J.M. Muse uses a host of characters to tell this tale about being mixed race and living in multicultural Los Angeles. As the story unfolded, I found it both terrifying and fascinating as it took me through a journey of what if. What would, and could happen, if stereotypes were reversed. Straight from today's headlines, Mixed Blessings keeps you guessing from the first page to the last. Mixed Blessings is a fascinating and terrifying read that keeps you wondering what's going to happen next from the first page to the last.
